Antonios Karampatzos

Dr. iur. Antonios G. Karampatzos is Professor of Civil Law at the Law School of National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. Between 2000-2004 he obtained his PhD and LL.M. at the Law School of University of Tübingen (Germany), under the supervision of Professor Dr. iur. Dres hc Harm Peter Westermann. His PhD-thesis –which was unanimously accepted with “summa cum laude” (excellent)– concerned contracts with protective effects towards third parties and the liability of financial experts for pure economic loss;its title in German read, namely, as follows: “Vom Vertrag mit Schutzwirkung für Dritte zur deliktischen berufsbezogenen Vertrauenshaftung – Zugleich ein Beitrag zum Ersatz fahrlässig verursachter reiner Vermögensschäden” (Nomos Verlag, 2005). After his stay in Germany, he carried out post-doctoral research (post-doc) in London at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of UCL. His post-doc research was presented in his paper under the title “Supervening Hardship as Subdivision of the General Frustration Rule: A Comparative Analysis with Reference to Anglo-American, German, French and Greek Law” (European Review of Private Law 2-2005, pp. 105-147). He has also been a visiting scholar at the School of Law of UC Berkeley (USA) in the field of behavioral law & Economics (2015) as well as an academic visitor at the Faculty of Law of University of Oxford (UK) in the field of jurisprudence. He has written seven books and published a plethora of scientific papers in Greek, German, and English. His areas of interest include private law, legal theory, jurisprudence, economic analysis of law and behavioral law and economics. His latest book in English has the title “Private Law, Nudging and Behavioural Economic Analysis – The Mandated-Choice Model” (Routledge, 2020). Dr. iur. A.Karampatzos has organized and participated in numerous domestic and international legal conferences. He is member of the Athens Bar Association. In November 2008 he was also certified as an Accredited Mediator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. As attorney-at-law and legal expert he has been offering high-quality services to domestic as well as international clients, being involved in numerous civil and commercial law litigations and arbitrations. He has acted as legal advisor to significant domestic and international companies or public entities. Furthermore, he has participated in numerous arbitration proceedings either as Counsel or Arbitrator, or Expert Witness. He is a native Greek speaker, while fluent in English, German and French. Last but not least, he is a regular newspaper columnist.
